Cultural Competence
Connections Become Relationships

What is Cultural Competence?
Cultural competence is the ability to effectively interact, work, and develop meaningful relationships with people of various cultural backgrounds. It allows you to acknowledge and accept differences in appearance, behavior and culture.

Cultural competence goes beyond “cultural awareness”, “cultural sensitivity”, or “diversity” training. It is the combination of cultural awareness (your own as well as others), cultural knowledge (generally and specific to your clients), and practical demonstrable skill sets.

Why Develop Cultural Competence?
> To respond to current and projected demographic changes. While under 18 non-Hispanic White Americans in the US. are already a minority as of 2020, it is projected that non-Hispanic Whites overall will become a minority within the US by 2045.

> To meet legislative and regulatory requirements. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: Forbids discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

> Without cultural competence we co-exist with people we don't understand, creating a higher risk for misperceptions,  misjudgment, hurt feelings, and bias.
